Extension Aftercare for Lasting Luxury Hair

Your extensions should still look polished weeks after fitting, not merely on the day you leave the salon. The difference is thoughtful extension aftercare: a routine that preserves the softness, movement and full-length finish you invested in, while protecting both your natural hair and the attachment method.

Premium raw human hair behaves beautifully because it retains its natural integrity, but it also deserves the same considered care as your own hair. Whether you wear Nano Tips, a discreet weft system or Invisible Tape extensions, the goal is the same: clean, hydrated, tangle-free lengths with attachment points that remain secure and undetectable.

Why Extension Aftercare Changes Everything

High-quality, double-drawn extensions are designed for density from root to tip. Their longevity, however, is shaped by how they are washed, dried, brushed and styled between maintenance appointments. Product build-up near the roots can affect bonds or tapes, while rushed brushing and sleeping with damp hair can create unnecessary tension and matting.

There is no one-size-fits-all routine. Your natural hair type, lifestyle, water hardness, gym schedule and fitting method all matter. Curly and wavy textures may need more moisture through the lengths, while fine, straight hair often benefits from lighter products applied with precision. Your extension specialist should always be the final authority on the care requirements of your specific installation.

With the right approach, real human-hair extensions retain their lustre, elasticity and natural-looking finish for far longer. This is particularly important with longer lengths, where the ends have more exposure to clothing, heat styling and daily friction.

Washing Extensions Without Compromising the Fitting

Wash your hair only when it needs it. For most extension wearers, two to three washes each week is enough, although this can vary if you exercise frequently or have an oilier scalp. Over-washing can leave the lengths dry, while delaying washes for too long can allow oil and styling residue to gather around attachment points.

Before getting in the shower, gently brush your hair from the ends upwards, holding the roots to avoid pulling. This takes less than a minute and prevents loose tangles from becoming more difficult once wet.

Use a professional, sulphate-free shampoo and focus it on the scalp. Massage carefully with your fingertips rather than your nails, working between rows or sections without rough scrubbing. Let the lather rinse through the lengths instead of piling the hair on top of your head. That familiar shampoo-advert movement may feel satisfying, but it is one of the quickest ways to encourage tangling in long extensions.

Follow with conditioner from the mid-lengths to the ends, avoiding bonds, tapes, beads and the top edge of any weft. Conditioning products are designed to soften the hair, which is excellent for lengths but not for the areas that need to stay firmly anchored. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Very hot water can dehydrate the hair and make colour fade more quickly.

Once a week, use a nourishing mask through the lower lengths. Leave it on for the recommended time, then rinse completely. A mask is a useful treatment, not a reason to saturate attachment points with rich oils.

Drying Is Part of Your Extension Care Routine

Never rub extensions dry with a towel. Instead, gently press and squeeze away excess water using a soft microfibre towel or cotton T-shirt. Rubbing raises the cuticle, creates friction and can leave the hair looking less smooth.

Apply a lightweight heat protectant through the mid-lengths and ends before blow-drying. Keep the airflow moving downwards from roots to ends, using a medium heat setting wherever possible. Dry the attachment area fully, especially around wefts and tapes. Going to bed with even slightly damp roots can cause tangling, compromise comfort and create an environment that is not kind to the scalp.

Air-drying is suitable for some textures and lifestyles, but it is not always the best choice for fitted extensions. If the roots remain wet for hours, particularly after a late shower or gym session, you risk unnecessary matting. When in doubt, dry the root area and attachment points first, then allow the ends to finish drying naturally if desired.

Brushing Without Pulling

A specialist extension brush is one of the simplest and most valuable parts of your routine. Look for flexible bristles without balls on the ends, as these can catch around attachment points. Brush at least morning and night, plus before washing, exercising or sleeping.

Start at the ends, then gradually work upwards in small sections. Hold your hair at the roots while brushing the lengths so you are not transferring tension to the fitting. Finally, gently brush close to the scalp and between rows, taking care not to snag bonds, tapes or stitching.

Tangles tend to form at the nape of the neck, behind the ears and where hair meets scarves, high collars or handbag straps. Catching them early is far kinder to your natural hair than trying to pull through a knot later. If you encounter a stubborn tangle, use a light leave-in detangling product on the lengths and work slowly from below rather than forcing the brush through.

Heat Styling and Products: Choose Precision Over Excess

Raw, unprocessed human hair offers exceptional versatility. You can curl, wave and straighten it, but repeated high heat will eventually affect any hair, including the finest extensions. Keep hot tools at a moderate temperature, use heat protection every time and avoid passing straighteners repeatedly over the same section.

Serums and oils can give the ends a glossy, polished finish, especially after styling. Use a small amount, warm it between your palms and smooth it only through the lower lengths. Heavy products close to the roots can make hair look flat and may interfere with the attachment area.

Avoid aerosol products, dry shampoo, thick texturising sprays and SPF mists directly over bonds, tapes or weft tops whenever possible. These formulas can leave residue that is difficult to remove and may shorten the time between refits. If you use dry shampoo, apply it sparingly to the scalp in between rows, then brush it through thoroughly.

Protect Your Extensions While You Sleep, Swim and Train

The quiet hours matter. Before bed, ensure the hair is completely dry, gently brushed and secured in a loose low plait or ponytail. A silk or satin pillowcase can further reduce friction, helping the lengths retain their smoothness and reducing morning tangles.

For exercise, tie your hair back softly rather than pulling it into a tight high ponytail. After a workout, allow the scalp to cool and dry before brushing. If sweat has left the roots feeling damp, dry them with a cool or medium airflow rather than leaving moisture trapped near the fitting.

Swimming requires more preparation. Chlorine, salt water and sunscreen can leave extensions dry or discoloured, particularly lighter blonde shades. Before entering the pool or sea, wet the lengths with clean water and apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner to the ends. Wear the hair in a secure plait, avoid submerging it where possible, and rinse it promptly afterwards. A shampoo and conditioning treatment may be needed after a long swim.

Respect the Maintenance Appointment

Extensions are not designed to be worn indefinitely without professional adjustment. As your natural hair grows, attachment points move further from the scalp. Left too long, this can increase tangling and place avoidable tension on the natural hair.

Your maintenance timing depends on the method, growth rate and how you wear your hair day to day. Tape and weft systems generally require regular repositioning, while individual methods also need timely checks and removal by a trained professional. Never attempt to remove bonded, taped or sewn-in extensions yourself. The right professional removal process protects your natural hair and allows reusable premium hair to be refitted where appropriate.

At your appointment, mention any discomfort, shedding, slipping, itching or areas that tangle more than usual. Small issues are usually straightforward to resolve when addressed early. Waiting until a fitting feels painful or heavily matted makes the process more complicated than it needs to be.

Luxe by SHE extensions are selected for a naturally full, luxurious finish, but their beauty is sustained in the everyday details: gentle hands, considered products and timely professional care. Treat your extensions as the premium investment they are, and they will continue to elevate your look with softness, confidence and effortless movement.
